Wes Welkers wife apologizes for ripping Ray Lewis
The day after another disappointing loss for the New England Patriots, it was the wife of a player who again was making news for her emotional postgame outburst
Anna Burns Welker lashed out at Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis after her husband, Wes Welker, dropped two passes in the AFC championship game and finished with eight catches for 117 yards and a touchdown. Burns Welker wrote on Facebook (via the Baltimore Sun):
“Proud of my husband and the Pats. By the way, if anyone is bored, please go to Ray Lewis’ Wikipedia page. 6 kids 4 wives. Acquitted for murder. Paid a family off. Yay. What a hall of fame player! A true role model!”
The note quickly caught fire, helping boost the clicks on Lewis’s Wikipedia page by 500,000 over the previous day’s number. Burns Welker apologized shortly afterward and deleted the passage:

“I’m deeply sorry for my recent post on Facebook,” she said in a statement sent to Larry Brown Sports. “I let the competitiveness of the game and the comments people were making about a team I dearly love get the best of me. My actions were emotional and irrational and I sincerely apologize to Ray Lewis and anyone affected by my comment after yesterday’s game. It is such an accomplishment for any team to make it to the NFL playoffs, and the momentary frustration I felt should not overshadow the accomplishments of both of these amazing teams.”
Burns Welker has company in the “unfortunate remarks by a wife in the face of a disappointing loss” department. A big dropped pass by Welker was the subject of controversy last February, when Tom Brady’s wife, Gisele Bundchen, famously ripped the team’s wide receivers by saying, “My husband cannot [expletive] throw the ball and catch the ball at the same time. I can’t believe they dropped the ball so many times.”
