Redskins offense snap counts vs. Bills: Spencer Long starts over Shawn Lauvao at left guard

Publish date: 2024-07-20

The Redskins defeated the Buffalo Bills, 21-16, on Friday at FedEx Field during their third preseason game. Here’s how the 72 offensive snaps were divided up:

Quarterback
Kirk Cousins – 47 snaps (played 65 percent on offense)
Colt McCoy – 25; 35%
Nate Sudfeld – DNP

Cousins ended his outing with three straight touchdown drives, but it got off to a rough start. He threw an interception on the first drive and had timing issues with some of his wide receivers. He finished 12 of 23 for 188 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. McCoy was 7 of 10 for 59 yards in the second half. Sudfeld didn’t play, but he’ll get plenty of snaps on Thursday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Running back
Robert Kelley – 48; 67%
Mack Brown – 23; 32%
Joe Kerridge – 3; 4%
Keith Marshall – 1; 1%
Matt Jones – DNP
Chris Thompson – DNP
Kelsey Young – DNP

Washington played without Thompson and Jones, which enabled Kelley to serve as the lead back. He ran well and helped his case to earn the third running back spot on the roster. Kelley rushed for 51 yards on 12 carries, averaging 4.3 yards per attempt. Marshall got hurt on his only snap, a three-yard gain. He injured his left elbow and did not return to the game. Brown had a solid game with 43 yards on 11 attempts.

Wide receiver
Maurice Harris – 42; 58%
Pierre Garcon – 36; 50%
Rashad Ross – 33; 46%
Ryan Grant – 27; 38%
DeSean Jackson – 24; 33%
Valdez Showers – 13; 18%
Jamison Crowder – DNP
Kendal Thompson – DNP
Dez Stewart – DNP
T.J. Thorpe – DNP (eight snaps on special teams)
Jarvis Turner – DNP (three snaps on special teams)
Reggie Diggs – 1; 1%

The wide receivers didn’t help Cousins with a few drops in the game, including one from Garcon. They did gain some yards after catches, however. Jackson finished with 56 yards on four receptions, including a 39-yard completion where he weaved around defenders on a short pass. Garcon and Grant both caught touchdown passes from Cousins in the first half. The Redskins already waived 10 players in their first round of cuts, and it included three from this position – Showers, Stewart and Turner.

Tight end
Jordan Reed – 36; 50%
Vernon Davis – 28; 39%
Niles Paul – 26; 36%
Logan Paulsen – 15; 21%
Marcel Jensen – 5; 7%

We haven’t seen it much, if any, during the preseason, but Davis posed a threat in the passing game against Buffalo. He caught all three targets for 42 yards, including a 22-yard reception during the team’s two-minute drill. Reed had two drops, but also recorded a 20-yard touchdown reception. The Redskins will stick with Reed and Davis as their top tight ends with Paul serving as a versatile backup. He had two receptions for 16 yards.

Mike Jones’s 53-man roster projection

Offensive line
Ty Nsekhe – 54; 75%
Brandon Scherff – 54; 75%
Trent Williams – 47; 65%
Kory Lichtensteiger – 47; 65%
Spencer Long – 38; 53%
Shawn Lauvao – 25; 35%
Takoby Cofield – 25; 35%
Nila Kasitati – 24; 33%
Arie Kouandjio – 24; 33%
Morgan Moses – 18; 25%
Austin Reiter – 10; 14%
Isaiah Williams – DNP (two snaps on special teams)
Josh LeRibeus – DNP
Al Bond – DNP
Cody Booth – DNP

Williams played in his first preseason game after missing the first two with a knee issue. Washington allowed just one sack but eight quarterback hits. It did a solid job in pass protection for the most part, while creating lanes in the running game for Kelley and Brown. The Redskins stuck with Long at left guard for the third straight game over Shawn Lauvao then shifted him over to center once Lichtensteiger left the game.
